NAAM is greatly mis-understood.
In sant mat - they say there is Varnatmik Naam and Dhunatmik Naam.
Varnatmik means the word that is SPOKEN and WRITTEN. It is the MEANS.
Dhunatmik is that which cannot be spoken. It is the goal - the real Naam.
But what exactly is NAAM???
NAAM is REALIZATION of Truth. NAAM liberates you - REALIZATION liberates you.
NAAM actually means REALIZATION. However, sant mat has mis-interpreted the real meaning.
So initaites of sant mat repeat five words and wait for the shabd to manifest. They are going to have a long wait because it will never happen.
The Gurbani says "Ram Ram Sab koi Kahi 0 kahi Ram no hoi. Gur parsadi Ram man vasi tha phal pavi koi." Everyone repeats Ram, Ram (God) but by repeating he does not come. By the grace of the Guru, God will reside in your mind.
What this means is that repeating some words like a parrot will not do anything for you. You can repeat them all your life - nothing is going to happen because you have mis-understood the meaning of Naam.
The REALIZED person speaks from his truth and you listen carefully. That is Varanatmik Naam. When you let it in and ponder over it - that is called SIMRAN and DHYAN. It means to PONDER OVER and to go beyond the mind and beyond concepts.
Truth is not a theory or a concept. It is beyond concepts and beyond the mind. When you sre in the company of a realized person - and are receptive and open - then something will happen to you. This happening is Dhunatmik Naam. It is when you drop all your existing knowledge and become empty then you get filled by the truth and truth becomes obvious to you. Then you REALIZE the truth for yourself - this is called Dhunatmik. Once this happens - you are liberates from the bonds of karma. How? Because karma only exists in separation - in duality. When you relize the truth - you realize that you have always been the ONE. The ONE is Truth. It is never born and it never dies. It is your True Nature. It is who you really are.
